I reside in Norway which is the most oil, fjord and financially rich country in Scandinavia. Despite exporting oil and gas as much as they can, its inhabitants live with severe energy austerity in the belief that this is for fighting the terrible threat of the non existing problem of global warming.
The money this income brings is now in part to be spent on fighting global warming.
They are investing money in the REDD program, which is the program where rich investors and rich countries like Norway buy up rain forest and make money selling carbon credits. Another idea is to pay developing countries for using less CO2, i.e. not to develop their economies.
